Pressure Cooker Safety Checklist Before Every Use

Before using a pressure cooker, follow the exact model manual to check the lid, gasket or sealing ring, vent, regulator and safety components; stay within the food-specific fill limit; and use only the approved pressure-release method. Designs vary, so this checklist is a reminder to consult the manual—not a replacement for it.

Hawkins' published safeguards require users of its cookers to check that the vent tube, vent weight and safety valve are clear before closing, avoid forcing a pressurised cooker open, and use genuine parts or authorised service for the repairs it specifies. Apply those instructions only to the Hawkins models they cover; use the equivalent instructions supplied by the maker of another cooker.

Before adding food

Begin with an unheated stovetop cooker. Identify every pressure-control and sealing component using the exact manual. Check the body, lid, handles and gasket for visible damage or a condition the manual says requires service or replacement. Use only the gasket and parts specified for the model.

Follow the manual's specified method for confirming that the steam vent and pressure-release components are clear. Hawkins' Ekobase trial-run instructions, for example, direct the user to look through the steam vent and ensure it is clear. Do not modify a vent, regulator or safety component.

Load it correctly

Use the liquid quantity and fill limit specified for the recipe and model. Foods that expand or froth can have a lower permitted level. The Hawkins Ekobase manual, for example, distinguishes two-thirds capacity for solid foods, half capacity for liquid or frothing foods, and a lower one-third limit for specified sprouting dals. Do not transfer those fractions to another cooker without its manual.

Close and operate the cooker only as its manual directs. Keep the pressure-control area unobstructed. If the cooker behaves outside the manual's normal operating description, stop following the recipe and use the manufacturer's model-specific fault or service guidance; do not improvise around a safety device.

Cool and open as directed

Pressure-release methods are not interchangeable. Use only the method approved for the cooker and food. Hawkins' safeguards say not to force a cooker open and to wait until it has cooled and internal pressure has reduced. Follow the exact model's indicators and opening procedure rather than relying on a generic whistle count or timer.

After use, clean and store the cooker as directed. Replace wear or safety parts only with the exact parts and service route the manufacturer specifies. BIS currently lists IS 2347:2023 for domestic pressure cookers in its product-manual catalogue; certification scope is a useful product check, while daily operation still depends on the exact manufacturer's instructions.

Before-use checklist

  • Exact model manual available and understood.
  • Body, lid, handles and sealing parts show no condition the manual identifies as unsafe.
  • Vent and pressure-release components checked by the approved method.
  • Correct model-specific gasket, regulator and safety parts fitted.
  • Food and liquid remain below the applicable fill limit.
  • Lid closure, burner and heat source match the model instructions.
  • Approved pressure-release and opening method selected before cooking.
