Pressure Cooker Size Guide for Indian Households

Choose pressure-cooker size from the exact model's permitted fill levels, the dishes cooked most often, hob compatibility and filled handling—not from a universal servings chart. The nominal litre figure is the closed vessel's total volume, while the usable cooking quantity is lower and depends on the food and manufacturer instructions.

For one concrete example, Hawkins' Ekobase manual says the cooker body must not be filled beyond two-thirds, and sets lower limits for foods that expand or froth: half capacity for foods such as lentils and rice, and one-third for specified sprouting dals. Those limits are evidence for that Hawkins manual, not permission to transfer its quantities to another model. Always follow the manual supplied with the exact cooker.

Start with the meal you cook most

List the recipes and uncooked quantities that regularly share the stove. Record dal, rice, vegetables and batch-cooked dishes separately because the applicable fill limit can differ by food. Then compare those quantities with the exact model's manual rather than converting household size directly into litres.

If you use separators, grids or other inserts, check the internal dimensions and the manufacturer's approval for those accessories. The nominal litre number alone does not confirm that an existing set will fit. Compare the cooker base with the burner and follow the model's heat-source instructions.

Allow safe headroom

Never fill beyond the limit in the exact manual or the cooker's markings. Foods that expand or froth may require a lower limit. If a recipe quantity exceeds the permitted level, split the batch or use a correctly sized model; do not improvise a higher fill.

Material and shape affect daily handling. A broad base and a tall body use burner and storage space differently. Induction users must verify compatibility for the exact model. Consider empty weight plus food and liquid, particularly if the cooker must be moved between stove and counter.

Think beyond the biggest occasion

Buying for one annual gathering can leave you lifting and cleaning an oversized pot all year. Choose for the meal you prepare most often, with enough flexibility for occasional extra portions. Some kitchens are better served by two complementary sizes than one vessel expected to do everything.

Before buying, confirm nominal capacity, food-specific working limits, hob compatibility, dimensions, included parts, warranty, and the correct replacement route for model-specific gaskets or safety components. BIS currently lists IS 2347:2023 for domestic pressure cookers in its product-manual catalogue; certification scope is a useful product check, while operating and fill instructions still come from the exact manufacturer's manual.
